๐ Patterns & Sequences
Spot what repeats and guess what comes next
๐ Repeating patterns
A pattern is something that repeats over and over. Like: red, blue, red, blue, red, ___? The next one is blue!
Find the repeating group and count along. Does it go 2, 3, or 5 items, then repeat?
๐ฑ ๐ถ ๐ฑ ๐ถ ๐ฑ ___?
๐ถ
๐ Growing patterns
Some patterns grow: 1, 3, 5, 7, ___? Each time we add 2, so the next one is 9.
Ask: "What changes each step?"
- 1 + 2 = 3
- 3 + 2 = 5
- 5 + 2 = 7
- 7 + 2 = 9
The jump ๐
Look at how much things change. Each step, we add the same number.
๐ Finding the rule
Look at what stays the same and what changes.
Example: ๐ฑ ๐ถ ๐ฑ ๐ถ ๐ฑ โ The pattern is cat, dog, repeating. The 6th animal is a dog (because it starts: cat, dog, cat, dog, cat, dog)!
To find what comes next, count along and see which spot you land on in the pattern.
๐ก Pattern-spotting tips
- Say it out loud โ "Red, blue, red, blue..." helps you hear the pattern
- Circle the repeating group โ Draw loops around what repeats
- Use your fingers โ Point to each item as you count
- Look for differences โ The thing that changes is the pattern!
